All About Spine Surgery

Back pain is the most common health problem these days. Sometimes it is problematic to such an extent that non-surgical treatments do no good to heal it. Finally, the patient has to switch over to spine surgery.

There are various reasons for back pain, such as to bend frequently, to continue to sit for long hours, to lift heavy material in a routine manner, lack of exercise, and certain diseases such as cervical spondylitis or osteoarthritis and osteoporosis. Once the cause is verified, you can ask your doctor to perform surgery to get relief from pain.

There are two kinds of spine surgeries, namely open surgery and laser surgery.

Open surgery requires bigger incisions and muscles are stripped in this surgery. Further, more time is consumed in this surgery. Open surgery requires anesthesia and a prolonged stay for the patient in the hospital with a longer recovery time.

On the other hand, laser surgery, which uses the laser technique, requires smaller incisions and consumes less time. The patient can be discharged from the hospital within a few days with a comparatively shorter recovery time. Different types of surgeries can be done using the laser technique.

But before you decide to go in for surgery, you should keep many aspects in mind and you should accordingly prepare in many ways. First of all, you need to decide, which surgeon you need to consult and get your surgery done from. Then you need to get all your tests done to save time and also to make sure whether you need surgery or not. The third aspect is to inform the insurance company well in advance, if you have any health insurance. This will save you from panic at the time of payment of the bills. Lastly, you should mentally prepare for the fact that surgery may take a longer time than planned for. So, you should send a leave application to the workplace to cover this aspect.

Another much more important aspect is to check whether you really require the surgery or not. You should try every non-surgical treatment before you finally decide to go in for surgery. Other non-surgical methods to treat spinal pain are exercise, massage, medications, injections, yoga, and many other such treatments. Further, the adoption of the right posture can make you stay away from surgery for a longer period.

After you have undergone spine surgery, you should make sure that you do not bend your spine. You should always adopt the right posture as a habit. Spine surgery may take a longer period for you to recover from, but proper care and exercise can shorten the period.
