Failed Back Surgery - What Leads To It
Back pain!!! It is faced by almost everyone these days and the reason for that is lack of time. The work hours are on the increase and the time you get for yourself is on the decrease. This results in several health problems, the most common of which is back pain. Sometimes, the back pain is so chronic, continuous, and severe that surgery is the only viable treatment option. Even after surgery, in some cases, there is no relief from back pain. Every such case is categorized as a case of Failed Back Surgery Syndrome (FBSS). According to one study, the incidence of FBSS ranges between 5% to 50% of the total number of such surgeries performed.
Back surgery may fail to alleviate back pain due to many reasons. The foremost reason is scar tissue, that forms around the surgery site, which interrupts normal neurological functions. Besides this, lack of latest technologies required to be used in the surgery and/or iatrogenic surgery are also reasons for failure of surgery to alleviate back pain.
There are also those cases for which the surgery might not have been performed at the actual site that is the source of pain. Sometimes, the surgeon can fool the patient due to his own lack of knowledge and performs the surgery even when it is not needed. In some cases, the patient may be a poor fit for surgery. In certain cases, the diagnosis itself may be incorrect, which results in failure of surgery to alleviate back pain.
Many patients even have psychological, social and vocational problems that accompany back pain. And then there are people who need follow-up surgery, which leads to devastation. It not only scares the patient, but also creates a big hole in the patient's pocket. But inspite of follow-up surgery, some people find that there is no alleviation in back pain. Some surgeons are in a hurry to suggest surgery to the patient, although the pain can also be treated with the help of medicines. When it comes to back pain, surgery should always be the last option. You should first try every thing from all options of non-surgical treatment, and exercise to pain-relievers to even yoga, but should not think about surgery before you exhaust all of these options. Treatment for Failed Back Surgery Syndrome or FBSS should rely on some aspects such as extensive assessment using MRI, CT, or any other imaging technique. The surgeon should also consider the patient's health problems and extenuating life circumstances. The complete medical history of the patient should be taken under careful consideration by the surgeon. The surgeon must conduct a thorough physical examination of the patient. Other methods for pain-relief such as rehabilitation and pain-management should also be tried by the surgeon before surgery is finalized as the only option left,.
