How Spine Specialists Treat Back Pain

Spine Specialist

Different types of health professionals or practitioners perform different roles in the care of patients with spinal conditions. The selection of the most appropriate health professionals or team of health practitioners depends on the patients symptoms and the time period for which the symptoms have been present. Different health professionals have different qualifications and are trained in different areas, to varied extents, and each of them treats a different case of back pain. The spine specialists for the treatment of your back pain are primary care providers, doctors of osteopathy, primary physicians, chiropractors, spine surgeons, physiatrists and neurologists.

It is usual to start off spine treatment with a primary caretaker such as the medical doctor, or the doctor of osteopathy. If the patients back pain does not respond well to initial treatment, a consultation from a spine specialist becomes necessary.

Orthopedists and neurosurgeons perform major spine surgeries and sometimes they are even specially trained in that area with the help of fellow specialists. These surgeons are board certified from the respective American Boards.

The role of these two spine specialists is discussed below:

Orthopedic Surgeons - Orthopedic surgeons are normal doctors or osteopathy doctors who have completed a practice of five years in the surgical treatment of severe spinal conditions. The treatment of spinal disorders, sports injuries, arthritis, trauma, and fractures is handled by orthopedic surgeons.

Neurosurgeons - Neurosurgeons are normal doctors, or osteopathy doctors who have completed practice of five years to focus on the surgical treatment of patients that show neurological symptoms. Neurosurgeons are responsible for the treatment of disorders of the brain, spine, nerves, and intraspinal vasculature.

Both these surgeons are specially trained to cure disorders related to the spine. Recently, spine surgery has become increasingly specialized job, and the professions of neurosurgery and spinal surgery are now given special attention. The increase in the level of specialization and the laying of stress on the spine has led to enhancements in the techniques of surgery, which in turn has resulted in the overall improvement in the rates of success of spinal surgery and reduced post-operational problems. Thus spine surgeries now result in lesser discomfort and quicker healing time when compared to previous times.

Besides surgery, other treatments that spine specialists use to treat their patients include physical therapy (stretching exercises), passive physical therapy (heat or ice), prescription medicines and massage therapy. They keep their patients mobile and functional. Your first visit to spine specialist would basically include a complete investigation of your medical history related to the pain. After the medical history is reviewed, some additional related information would also be taken to continue further medication. This is done to know the exact cause of the problem.
