Spine Therapy - An Introduction

Spine Therapy

Chronic spine pain is one of the worst ailments that a person can suffer from and may even disable that person for life. Spine therapy is the treatment that a therapist uses to alleviate pain in the spinal area that may be affected by degeneration of the disc, or that may be affected by any injury caused by an accident or mishap. Therapies used to cure problems of the spine facilitate a lot of improvement in joint mobility and also relieve tension. When there is a misalignment in the vertebral column and vertebrae get dislocated, it results in the creation of immense pressure on nerves. This also results in a negative effect on all associated organ systems and their functions and also affects the smooth motion of joints.

Therapies for spinal problems have been used greatly in the past. The most widely used among all therapies is osteopathy and chiropractic therapy. These therapies have been very successful in the cure of, and for relief in spinal pain and ensures that parts of the spine become movable or mobile. These therapies can be used in the case of slipped disc and even after accidents or when the surgery is done on the patient. Both osteopathy and chiropractic therapy can treat problems in bones, muscles, ligaments and joints. The common aspect about all therapies, which are used for patients who suffer from spinal pain, is that they are made to lie on a special treatment couch which is adjustable to suit the height of the therapist.

Osteopathy was first introduced by an American doctor, named Andrew Taylor Still, and today it is widely accepted by allopathic doctors. Chiropractic therapy was developed by a magnetic healer named Daniel David Palmer. Under this therapy, the patient is first asked about the details of his/her medical history followed by the use of x rays, to know the exact condition of the spine and act upon it for further healing.

Physical therapy is another way to treat problems that affect spine disorders. Physical therapy is initiated by information about the need for correct posture and how to move about in a correct manner. Some methods of therapy such as the application of heat, electric stimulation and ultrasound to the affected area are also implemented by therapists. Physical therapy treatment also involves specific exercises which help to improve flexibility and to strengthen back muscles that help support the spine.

Other exercises or a combination of these can help and are covered under spine therapy. They are aerobics, swimming, walking, biking, strength exercises for the lumbar region, regular flexibility exercises, yoga, and contraction exercises. In general, it is known that the spine problem is cured, if the body remains in continuous movement. Bed rest is the worst option you should use when affected by any kind of spine problem.
